How can natural medicine make a difference in the life of a cancer patient?

Evidence-based insights into integrative oncology support

There are currently over one million people in Australia who are living with or have lived with cancer. Incidence continues to rise with cancer being the leading cause of mortality, accounting for three out of every 10 deaths.
After diagnosis, many patients experience a wide range of emotions including despair, disbelief or confusion. A diagnosis of cancer initiates a long journey that can affect physical health, mental wellbeing and relationships with loved ones. Holistic and natural medicine practitioners are well placed to offer significant support to patients at every stage of their cancer journey.

The role of the natural medicine practitioner

The role of natural healthcare practitioners in supporting those with cancer will vary and is unique to the individual. In most cases the natural medicine practitioner will offer collaborative support alongside standard oncology treatments. Holistic and complementary medicine is employed as an adjunct to conventional medicine, in an effort to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Various herbal medicines, nutraceuticals, dietary, lifestyle and psychological interventions can be integrated into a cancer patient’s treatment regime. An integrative treatment approach can significantly improve clinical outcomes and quality of life, while reducing side effects and risk of recurrence for many patients. Complementary oncology therapies may be employed to reduce the side effects of conventional treatment, support the immune system, support digestive function, improve energy and provide general emotional and nervous system support.

Patient-centred support

In dealing with the concerns bought about by a cancer diagnosis, patients are also faced with the stress caused by physically demanding treatments. Physical debilitation may further contribute to emotional distress, depression and anxiety. Up to 49% of people with cancer have been found to have co-occurring mental health concerns. As part of a patient-centred approach to healthcare, practitioners can provide a safe space for patients to voice their concerns and have them acknowledged. This holistic treatment model also provides patients with the opportunity to participate in their own care and can play an important role in influencing positive health outcomes.

One of the most important clinical outcomes of the holistic management of a person living with cancer is the enormous potential to improve their quality of life. As the incidence of cancer continues to rise there is an urgent need to ensure that patients are not only surviving cancer, but living well. Holistic and natural medicine practitioners are uniquely placed to provide this support.
