Definition of a Practitioner
BioMedica is committed to supporting the wholistic practitioner. As such, we have implemented a stringent sales policy whereby our products are only available to practitioners in a clinical setting. But who exactly qualifies as a practitioner?
The Therapeutic Goods Act Requirements (for a Practitioner)
The Therapeutic Goods Act 1991 has defined who should be recognised as a government registered health professional. These inclusions are listed below:
- Medical practitioners, psychologists, dentists, veterinary surgeons, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dietitians, scientists working in medical laboratories, registered nurses, biomedical engineers, and medical scientists in accredited laboratories.
- Natural therapists registered under a state or territory, herbalists, homeopathic practitioners, chiropractors, naturopaths, nutritionists, practitioners of traditional Chinese Medicine, and osteopaths.
The Therapeutic Goods Act 1991 states that all companies are required to obtain proof of eligibility from their clients before providing them information on therapeutic products, or the products themselves. To be eligible you must be either a registered health care professional (as described above) or a member of an approved association (please visit www.tga.gov.au for further information).
BioMedica abides by the regulations as described in the Therapeutic Goods Act 1991. However, we also strongly believe in the ethos of 'do no harm' when it comes to prescribing complementary therapies. As healthcare professionals, we have a legal obligation and duty of care to provide the highest possible standard of service to our clients. This includes only prescribing therapeutic goods which are highly indicated for the individual, and the ingredients of which are well understood by the prescribing 'physician'. We strongly urge all practitioners to consider this when recommending herbal and nutritional supplements to your clients, and to refer clients on to another practitioner when necessary.
